FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Schengen 90/180 rule?
Non-EU citizens can stay in the Schengen zone for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The 180-day window moves with each day — it always looks back 180 days from today. This applies to the entire Schengen area, not per country.
Which countries are in the Schengen zone?
The Schengen zone includes 27 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
What happens if I overstay my Schengen visa?
Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen zone (typically 1-5 years). Border officers check your stamps on exit. Even a few days overstay can have serious consequences.
Does the UK count toward my Schengen days?
No. The UK is not part of the Schengen zone. Time spent in the UK does not count toward your 90-day Schengen limit. The UK has its own visa rules allowing up to 180 days for many nationalities.
Can I reset my Schengen days by leaving and re-entering?
No. The 90/180 rule uses a rolling window. You cannot reset it by briefly leaving. You must wait until enough days have 'dropped off' the 180-day window. Use the calculator above to see exactly when your days free up.
